Winter driving presents many challenges. Winter driving also tends to lower fuel economy. The first rule of winter driving is to accelerate and decelerate slowly. If you accelerate too fast, your wheels start to spin and you loose control of the car. You also waste gas. Step on the gas slowly and very gently increase the pressure on it as you slowly start moving forward.
Slow and steady is also the most fuel efficient way to drive. Driving hard till you need to stop is bad practice regardless of the weather but in snow it could be deadly.
It takes a lot longer to stop on snow covered and slippery roads. You will also save gas if you come to a stop slowly rather than suddenly.
Don't stop your car if you don't have to. Again, this is a great fuel saving tip in any weather. If you see a light in the distance turn red, start slowing down right away. The less you have to stop, the safer you will be in poor driving conditions. Once again this driving technique not only keeps you safe but also helps save gas.
If you stay home, you won't use any gas either!
A lot of good fuel economy driving is the same good common sense. If you drive carefully in the winter, not only will you drive safer, you will drive more efficiently and will save gas.
